Growth Market

Private Credit in Singapore and India

At H.W. Anderson, we aim to expand and evolve in line with the markets. In recent years, the change in banking regulations on riskier lending has led to a gap in the market giving Private Credit a bigger platform than ever before. H.W. Anderson has established presence in Credit and Private Equity and has more recently expanded into APAC talent pools, making Private Credit in Singapore and India regions a natural next step. We work across Direct Lending, Asset-Backed Lending, Mezzanine Debt, Distressed Debt and Special Situations, working with key players in the market such as Private Equity firms, asset managers and hedge funds.

Asset Classes

Broad Scope

Due to more restrictive lending criteria for traditional banks, as well as the large amount of debt accrued globally during the Coronavirus pandemic, Private Credit is filling a gap in the market. Private Credit is lending through non-bank entities, structured and tailored to the borrower’s specific needs and the lender’s risk appetite. The Private Credit in Singapore and India space can be broadly covered by four main asset classes.

  • Direct Lending: Direct Lending consists of private loans to performing middle market, non-investment grade companies. Direct lending strategies may be appealing as they invest in the senior-most part of a company’s capital structure, which may provide steady current income with relatively lower risk. Lending is in the form of floating-rate investments that change as rates change, providing real-time interest rate mitigation.
  • Mezzanine Debt, Second Lien Debt and Preferred Equity: These three forms of credit, collectively known as “Junior Capital,” provide borrowers with subordinated debt. This kind of instrument is not secured by assets and ranks below more senior loans, e.g. direct lending, for repayment in the event of a default or bankruptcy. Junior Capital often comes with equity “kickers,” i.e. incentives that can support attractive total returns.
  • Distressed Debt: When companies enter financial distress, they work with existing distressed debt investors to improve their prospects through operational turnarounds and balance sheet restructuring. Distressed Debt is highly specialized and the prevalence of opportunities tends to coincide with economic downturns and periods of credit tightness. These lenders take on a higher level of risk in exchange for lower prices and potentially high returns.
  • Special Situations: Special situations involve any variety of non-traditional corporate events that require deep care and customisation. This may include companies undergoing Mergers and Acquisitions, divestitures or spinoffs, or any similar situations that are driving their borrowing needs. These strategies require a high level of expertise to identify and capitalize on unique investment opportunities.
