HW Anderson has experience delivering equity portfolio manager recruitment services to a variety of hedge funds. Our extensive global market mapping and relationship-based approach has allowed us to identify key talent in the markets. We are most frequently engaged by the following type of firms:
- Multi Manager funds: Multi-manager funds have several Portfolio managers running separate books within the same hedge fund. Each Portfolio Manager typically runs a sector-specific book and manages a team of Investment Analysts and Associates who assist with analysis and feed investment ideas into the portfolio. Each team will have a unique approach to investment and research, making the role of a Portfolio Manager particularly important. Multi manager funds are larger in terms of AUM and personnel.
- Single Manager funds: A Single Manager fund consists of a single Portfolio Manager running a single equity strategy. Single Manager funds typically have a row of Sector Heads who manage specific sub-sectors and feed investment ideas into the Portfolio Manager. Typically, a single manager fund focuses on one or two sectors within equities, tending to concentrate on where the Portfolio Manager’s expertise lies. These funds are smaller in terms of AUM and personnel.
- Transitioning Portfolio Manager Programs: We partner with a number of investment funds that support Equity Analysts and Sector Heads who are looking to take the next step in their career to become a Portfolio Manager. These programs allocate a smaller amount of capital to transitioning PMs and offer more hands-on learning and more flexible risk tolerance. These programs can be great launching points for individuals as they allow for PMs to accumulate a PnL track record. These firms benefit greatly from the visibility we provide on the up and coming talent from our vantage point of equity portfolio manager recruitment specialists.
Global Strategic Relationships
We have a track record of placing Equity Portfolio Managers across the key global financial hubs including London, New York, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, Hong Kong and Singapore. We have helped a number of our equity clients with international expansion into the US, European and Asian markets.
HW Anderson focuses on delivering strong equity PM talent internationally. We work with funds across a variety of different equity strategies. We most frequently work with the following firm types.
A long-only investor is a Portfolio Manager who buys stocks when prices are low believing their value will go up, selling them at a later date. These investments typically have longer time horizons.
Long/Short investors take long positions in stocks that are expected to appreciate and short positions in stocks that are expected to depreciate. A Long/Short investor seeks to maximize alpha while minimizing market exposure.
A market neutral strategy is a Long/Short strategy that has an equal number of long and short positions. This strategy avoids market risk by creating a hedge against market factors. Many large multi manager funds deploy a market neutral investment strategy. Identifying and assessing how successful a PM will be on a market neutral platform is a key part of our role as equity portfolio manager recruitment specialists
A directional strategy is a Long/Short strategy that does not have an equal number of long and short positions. An investor can deploy a net-long strategy if the market is perceived to be heading upward and a net-short strategy if the market is heading downward. Many single manager funds deploy a directional investment strategy. As equity portfolio manager recruitment experts we are adept at assessing the nuance of a given individuals investment strategy.
