More recently, the distressed market has steadily picked up once again due to energy price rises, supply chain disruption, rising interest rate and inflationary pressures. Distressed Debt refers to the securities of a government or company that has either defaulted, is under bankruptcy protection, or is in financial distress and moving toward the aforementioned situations in the near future. It includes all credit instruments that are trading at a significant discount and have a spread substantially wider than the industry average. Many large and well-established firms, with the resourcing and appetite for higher risk, have moved into this asset class in the last decade, with Distressed Debt strategies commonly in commercial real estate or as an option for companies that require refinancing and balance sheet restructuring.
Private Equity Firms: H.W. Anderson maintains strong ties with top Private Equity firms, many of which are growing into the Distressed debt space. Private Equity firms typically aim to gain majority shareholding of a company in or near bankruptcy, reorganise and restructure the company and create value, returning the company to a place where it can operate sustainably.
Hedge Funds: As a distressed debt recruiter, H.W. Anderson understands that Hedge Funds are likely to deploy more short-term strategies, such as Distressed Debt Trading and Distressed Debt Non-Control, aiming for more liquidity in their investments, so their hiring requirements will often be distinct from those of Private Equity firms.
Distressed Funds: Also known as a Vulture Fund is a Hedge Fund or Private Equity fund that invests exclusively in Distressed Debt. Large Vulture Funds are well placed to focus capital on strategies that are high-risk, but potentially high-reward, to accumulate distressed assets such as fixed income instruments or government debt, that other portfolio managers may be keen to avoid.
